CEFR levels of italian


LEVELS

The "Certificate of Studies" have been calibrated on the Council of Europe Levels (A1, A2 - B1, B2 - C1, C2).
BEGINNER

The student can recognize familiar words and very basic statements concerning him/herself, the family and immediate concrete surroundings. He/she can use single phrases and sentences in areas of immediate need, can write a short postcard, fill in a form with personal details, can ask and answer simple questions.

The student can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and simple sentences aimed at the satisfaction of concrete needs. He/she can introduce him/herself and others, ask and answer questions about personal details, people, places and things. He/she can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks clearly and slowly and helps.

A 2
The student can understand simple and frequently used phrases and expressions, related to areas of most immediate personal relevance; he/she can read very short and simple texts (such as advertisements, prospectuses, personal letters), can communicate simple and routine tasks, can handle very short social exchanges, can describe aspects of his/her background and job, as well as the environment and matters in areas of immediate need.

B 1
The student can understand the main points of clear standard speech on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure etc. He/she can understand texts consisting mainly of high frequency/job-related language. He/she can deal with most situations likely to arise in an area where the language is spoken, can write simple connected texts on different topics, describe experiences and events, can give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

The student can understand extended speech and texts on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. He/she can read articles and reports regarding contemporary problems, can understand contemporary literary prose. He/she can write clear and detailed text on a wide range of subjects related to his/her field of interest. He/she can speak with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible, can explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

C 1
The student can understand extended speech, long and complex factual and literary texts, most TV programmes and films without too much effort. He/she can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously, can use the language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. He/she can present clear, detailed descriptions of complex subjects, produce clear, well-structured, detailed texts of different kinds in an assured, personal and appropriate style.

C 2
The student has no difficulty in understanding any kind of spoken language and can read with ease virtually all forms of the written language. He/she can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. He/she has a good familiarity with idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms, can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely. He/she can present a clear description or argument in a style appropriate to the context, always differentiating the finer shades of meaning.
